Handmade paper has begun to find its place as the most important part of Bhutanese culture and tradition. Papermaking first began as a domestic occupation and is still preserved to this day. In the year 1990 the Government, Ministry of Trade and Industry established the Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory to act as a key pilot to safeguard the old tradition of handmade paper making in Bhutan and expand its market for commercial purposes.

In 1992 the factory was privatized under the sole proprietorship of Mr. Norbu Tenzin, who was trained and sent as a missionary in Shimane Prefecture, Japan for high quality and designing of Bhutanese traditional handmade paper for the international market.

The Gawaling Tours & Treks is the only tour operator in Bhutan that provides traditional handmade paper-making tours. We provide tours/packages to those clients who are interested in making paper and want to learn about the art of Bhutanese handmade paper making. A tour can be for 7 days / 14 days / 21 days or you can book your own private trips depending upon the number of days you want to be trained in traditional handmade paper making.

Further, we can also take you to the far corners of Bhutan to visit some of the local handmade paper-making units, rather than learn the art of Bhutanese handmade paper making.

For those people who are interested to learn the art of papermaking/to visit some of the local paper-making units in Bhutan, they have to pay the extra bill per person per day for a particular number of training days.
